Holocaust Memorial Day Trip and Talk

Wednesday 27th January marked the 71st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and also Holocaust Memorial Day. The Humanities Department presented assemblies last week looking at the story of Else Cohn who was a German Jewish refugee that came across to Britain on the Kinder transport in 1939.

A group of Year 9 and Year 13 Religious Studies students also attended Trafford’s Holocaust Memorial afternoon on Wednesday, where there were speakers from other schools presenting the stories of heroes of the Holocaust. Students were also informed about recent genocides and the Syrian refugee crisis so they could understand the parallels between the Holocaust and what is happening in the world today.

On Friday the History Department arranged for a speaker to come into school to discuss with Year 9 students their own connections with the Holocaust and whether anti-semitism still exists today. There were around 150 students in attendance to this event who listened intently to Freddy Naftel as he recalled his grandparents fleeing from Germany in 1939 to Manchester.
