Weekly Bulletin: 14th March 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

Following feedback from some parents, I am going to try to keep my weekly bulletins a little shorter from now on and, rather than including all details within the bulletin, instead providing links to news items for those of you who are interested in reading more. Please do let us know if you have any thoughts – good or bad – about the slightly new approach.

News items:

  • Afritwin Auction of Promises Evening (over £8000 raised to help our work in South Africa). Click here
  • Sports Relief (plenty of fundraising activities going on this week). Click here
  • Rugby success (congratulations to three students for being selected to play high level rugby). Click here

Our latest school production will be ‘It Snows’ by Bryony Lavery, Steven Hoggett and Scott Graham, as part of the National Theatre’s Connections festival 2016. Students have been working extremely hard and have been rehearsing non-stop for the 3 performances here at Lymm. The production will take place on Tuesday 22nd, Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th March at 7pm in the Main Hall. Tickets cost £6 for an adult and £3 concession and are available from the school shop. This is going to be a fantastic performance and I wish our students and staff the best of luck in the lead up to the shows.

I would like to remind our parents of Year 8 students that Parents Evening will be on Thursday this week from 5-8pm. Students should currently be making appointments in their planners.

Our new Scholastic Book Club is up and running! Go to http://schools.scholastic.co.uk/lymm to browse the latest books and order online. For every £1 you spend on this month’s Book Club, our school will earn 20p in Scholastic Rewards. Please place your order online by April 1st, 2016.

Thank you very much to those of you who responded recently to the Parent View questionnaire; your feedback is much appreciated. One of the areas in which we want to improve is that of communication with parents – always a real challenge to get right in a large secondary school where so much is going on! With this in mind, I am hosting a Parents Forum evening on Wednesday 27th April at 6pm and the focus will be on communication, including the website. If you would like to come along, please let Mrs Headon know so that we can ensure there are refreshments available for everyone: hheadon@lymmhigh.org.uk. Your views will be very welcome.

Finally, I will be speaking to all students this week about one or two issues relating to school rules. Whilst behaviour at the school is generally very good, and the vast majority of students are exceptionally well-behaved, there are certain rules that too many students are choosing not to follow at the moment. In particular, too many students are not wearing uniform correctly – the most common issues being boys letting shirts hang out and girls tucking jumpers into rolled up skirts. In addition, some students are choosing to eat food and use mobile phones on corridors, both things they all know are not allowed. There will be a new system of sanctions in place from next week to tackle these issues and I know I can count on your support – we would all rather spend our time on more important things than having the same conversations over and over again with students who are deliberately breaking rules. We also know that teenagers are very skilled at playing us all off against one another (“but, Mum/Dad, everyone else wears their jumper tucked in!”) and I hope the clarification of rules and more consistent enforcement will help reduce tension at home as well as in school.
