Weekly Bulletin: 25th January 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

We begin this week with a celebration, as the publication of the official league tables showed that, as expected, Lymm High School has regained top spot in Warrington. 74% of our students gained the key benchmark of at least 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths, more than any other school in the borough. The school also saw the best results at A Level, with 53% gaining A*-B grades and 79% A*-C grades and the highest average grade per A Level entry.

I have been quoted in the press as saying that there is no complacency about these results and that is certainly the case – we recognise that, with the kind of fabulous students we are lucky enough to have here, we really ought to be near the top of these tables. Nevertheless, the results are a confirmation of the fact that the school is in a strong position now and we will use the energy this generates to ensure that we continue to go from strength to strength.

I would like to thank all of our Year 9 parents who attended our Choices Evening last week. We hope the evening provided you with enough information to help support your child through the process, as they begin to make their final KS4 subject choices. May I take this opportunity to remind you that students should return their completed form to Mr Thompson on Friday 29th January.

We had a busy day on Friday as 180 Year 5 pupils from our partner primaries joined us in school for the second ‘Primary Science Day’. They spent the whole day experiencing several interactive science investigations, using one of our labs and participating in an explosive chemistry demonstration! Thank you to all the staff and students who worked extremely hard to run the day, with a particular ‘thank you’ to Mrs Donlan for organising the event.

We also have a couple of sporting achievements to celebrate this week. Firstly congratulations and well done to the Year 7 indoor athletics squad who won at the Warrington championships in both boys and girls competitions.

Secondly, Rebecca Greenwood and Alice Hayden (both in Year 11) signed up to England Netball Young Leaders Award and have been working hard since September in assisting and leading practices with the Year 7 Netball team at Lymm High School, as well as carrying on their leadership at a local junior club. Due to the hours they were putting into their leadership, they were allowed to apply to be ball girls for the first test of the England versus Australia test series. The three test series started in Liverpool on Wednesday 20th January at the Echo Arena. Alice and Rebecca were selected from a large number of young leaders to work at the event and represent young netball leaders in the north of England. Well done on a fantastic achievement.

And finally, on Friday a group of Year 11 students celebrated with a doughnut party for achieving/exceeding 80% or more of their target grades in the mock exams. A huge well done must go to these students for all of their hard work and determination. I hope all of our students continue to keep up the work hard and preparation for their upcoming exams this summer.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We start the week celebrating the success of our Year 8 Football team who have made their way into the last 16 of the National School’s U13 Cup. On Friday they competed in a competitive game in blustery conditions. However, with a score of 0-0 at the full-time whistle, Fenton Green scored a fantastic goal in extra time, leading Lymm to a well-deserved win against Manchester Grammar School. Congratulations to the team and good luck in your forthcoming game against Meadowhead School.

Congratulations also go to Izzy Troth, who has received an offer from Pembroke College, Oxford University to study Languages. This is obviously a fabulous achievement and we wish her all the best in securing the necessary grades.

We look forward to welcoming around 180 Year 5 pupils from our partner primaries into school on Friday, for the second ‘Primary Science Day’. They will be spending the whole day here at LHS, experiencing several interactive Science investigations, using one of our labs and participating in an explosive Chemistry demonstration! All of the experiments and activities will be led by a selection of our Year 11 and Year 12 students. It promises to be a very exciting event, and will give the Year 5 pupils a wonderful introduction to Science here at Lymm.

I would like to remind our Year 9 parents that Choices Evening will take place this week on Thursday. The purpose of the evening is to enhance the information that you already have, to enable you and your child to make well-informed decisions relating to Key Stage 4 option choices for Year 10 and 11. The evening has been split – with designated time slots based on your child’s hall group. Please click here for more information.

Parents of Year 11 and Year 12 students should have already seen the letters relating to AS levels. If not, see the following links:

Also on Thursday this week, we have our ”Bags2schools” collection taking place. Bags have been made available to students; however any bag will be acceptable. Our record collection was just over £300, which we hope to beat this time.

On Friday we have a joint PTA and Afritwin event in school. “Step back in time” will showcase the talents of the local covers band “The Athertones”, which features several members of teaching staff from the school. A bar and snacks will be available on the evening. Tickets are £10 each or £60 for a table of 8, and can be purchased from the school shop. In the past these events have been great fun, so do come and join us in raising money for our school and school charity.
