A level French, German and Spanish

When students begin their A level language courses at Lymm High School, they benefit from a solid revision of the grammar learned at GCSE whilst being introduced to the new topics of A level language study.

At A level, students in French and Spanish follow the AQA specification. In German, they follow the Eduqas specification.

Students will develop their knowledge and cultural awareness through the study of spoken and written texts, literature and film as well as contemporary articles to enable pupils to develop an awareness of events in the French, German and Spanish speaking world.

A LEVEL FRENCH

In Year 12, students will study:

Theme 1 – Aspects of French-speaking society: current trends

  • The changing nature of family
  • The “cyber-society”
  • The place of voluntary work

Theme 2 – Artistic Culture in the French-speaking world:

  • A culture proud of its heritage
  • Contemporary francophone music
  • Cinema: the 7th art form

In Year 13, students will study:

Theme 3 – Aspects of French-speaking society: current issues

  • Positive features of a diverse society
  • Life for the marginalised
  • How criminals are treated

Theme 4 – Aspects of political life in the French-speaking world

  • Teenagers, the right to vote and political commitment
  • Demonstrations, strikes – who holds the power?
  • Politics and immigration

In addition to the four named themes above, students will also study the contemporary novel No et Moi by Delphine de Vigan and the film La Haine directed by Mathieu Kassovitz.

Secure knowledge and understanding of grammatical structures and a sound cultural awareness of the French-speaking world are also an essential part of the course.

Weekly conversation sessions with a native French speaker will help prepare students for the speaking element of the A level examination.

A LEVEL GERMAN

In Year 12, students will study:

Theme 1 – Being a young person in German-speaking society

  • Families and citizenship
  • Youth trends and personal identity
  • Education and employment opportunities

Theme 2 – Understanding the German-speaking world

  • Regional culture and heritage in Germany, German-speaking countries and communities
  • Media, art, film and music in the German-speaking world

 In year 13, students will study

Theme 3 – Diversity and Difference

  • Migration and integration
  • Cultural identity and marginalisation
  • Discrimination and diversity

Theme 4 – The making of modern Germany: 1989 onwards

  • Initial and subsequent process of reunification
  • Social cohesion in present-day Germany
  • The economic impact of a united Germany

In addition to the four named themes above, students will also study the Der Vorleser by Bernhard Schlink and the film Goodbye Lenin directed by Wolfgang Becker.

A LEVEL SPANISH

In year 12, students will study

Theme 1 – Aspects of Hispanic society

  • Traditional and modern family Values
  • Cyberspace
  • Equal rights (gay marriage/ LGBT rights/ women’s rights)

Theme 2 – Artistic culture in the Hispanic world

  • The influence of idols
  • Regional identity in Spain
  • Cultural heritage

In year 13, students will study

Theme 3 – Multiculturalism in Hispanic Society

  • Immigration
  • Racism
  • Integration

Theme 4 – Aspects of political life in the Hispanic world

  • Citizenship
  • The Monarchy and dictatorship
  • Social Movements

In addition to the four Themes named above, students will also study a film Ocho Apellidos Vascos and the play La Casa de Bernarda Alba by the renowned Spanish playwriter Féderico García Lorca.

Deep knowledge and understanding of grammatical structures and cultural awareness of the Spanish speaking world are also an essential part of the course.

Weekly conversation sessions with native Spanish speakers will help prepare students for the speaking element of the A level examination.
